Start with a target balance, current savings, and APY, then either solve for the monthly contribution you need or estimate how long your current plan may take.

This is a monthly projection using the APY and contribution pattern shown here. Real bank yields can change over time, and this version does not model taxes, bonuses, or irregular deposits.

What is a savings goal calculator?

A savings goal calculator helps you work backward from a target balance or forward from a planned contribution amount. By combining your current savings, an assumed APY, and either a time horizon or a monthly contribution, the tool can estimate the missing piece and show how the balance grows over time. It is useful for emergency funds, travel savings, home projects, tuition planning, and any other goal with a defined target amount.

How to use the savings goal calculator

  1. 1Enter the target amount, current savings, and APY so the projection starts from a realistic opening balance and yield assumption.
  2. 2Choose whether you want to solve for the monthly contribution needed by a deadline or estimate how long a planned contribution may take to reach the goal.
  3. 3Review the required contribution or estimated time, then inspect the projection table year by year before you copy or download the schedule.

Common savings-goal planning jobs

Building an emergency fund

Determine how much to set aside every month to reach a target cash reserve by a chosen deadline.

Checking whether a plan is fast enough

Estimate how many months a current deposit pattern may need before you can pay for a trip, renovation, or other defined goal.

Preparing a savings timeline for a household budget

Export the projection when you want to compare savings goals against other monthly priorities in a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator assume monthly compounding?

Yes. This tool converts the APY into an effective monthly rate and assumes contributions happen once per month. If your bank compounds differently or changes yields often, treat the result as an estimate.

What happens if my current balance can already reach the goal by itself?

When the existing balance plus interest is already enough by the chosen deadline, the required contribution can fall to zero. The tool still shows the projected ending balance so you can see the margin.

Why might the time-to-goal result say the target is not reached?

The time solver stops after a long built-in projection window. If the balance never reaches the goal inside that window, it tells you the plan is too slow under the current assumptions.
