What Is a Secure Password Generator?

A secure password generator creates random, unpredictable passwords using a cryptographically secure random number generator (CSPRNG). Unlike human-chosen passwords that tend to follow predictable patterns, generated passwords draw from a uniform distribution across the selected character set, maximizing entropy per character. Password strength is measured in bits of entropy — calculated as length × log₂(charset size). A 16-character password using uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols provides roughly 105 bits of entropy, which is considered very strong against brute-force attacks even with modern hardware.

How to Use This Password Generator

  1. Adjust the password length using the slider (default is 16 characters).
  2. Toggle character types: uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols.
  3. Optionally exclude ambiguous characters (like l, I, 1, O, 0) in the exclude field.
  4. A new password is generated automatically when you change any setting.
  5. Use the Bulk Generate section to create multiple passwords at once.

Common Use Cases for Password Generation

  • Creating unique passwords for each account — Generate a different strong password for every online account to limit the damage from a single data breach.
  • Database and API credentials — Generate long, high-entropy passwords for database users, API keys, and service accounts where human memorability is not needed.
  • Wi-Fi and network passwords — Create strong WPA2/WPA3 passwords for routers and access points to prevent unauthorized network access.
  • Temporary or one-time passwords — Quickly generate disposable passwords for temporary access, test accounts, or short-lived tokens.
  • Seed data for development — Generate bulk passwords for seeding user databases in development and testing environments.

FAQ

How long should my password be?
For most accounts, 16 characters with mixed character types is very strong. For high-security applications like encryption keys or master passwords, use 20 or more characters.
Is this generator truly random?
Yes. It uses the Web Crypto API's crypto.getRandomValues(), which is a cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (CSPRNG) built into your browser.
Why exclude certain characters?
Some characters look similar in certain fonts (l vs 1, O vs 0, I vs l). Excluding them avoids confusion when manually typing passwords. Some systems also disallow certain special characters.
Are generated passwords stored or sent anywhere?
No. All password generation happens locally in your browser. No passwords are transmitted to any server or stored anywhere — they exist only in your browser tab's memory.
